Bill passes to extend expiring veterans programs

A bill extending the life of several expiring veterans programs passed the House on Friday and is on its way to the White House for President Obama’s signature.

It covers several programs for homeless veterans, monthly allowances for veterans training for the Paralymics, a pilot program for child care centers at VA hospitals and permission to recover from third party insurers the cost of medical treatment for non-service connected disabilities.

Of course, extending authority for the programs that expire at midnight on Monday won’t mean much if Congress doesn’t come up with a way over the weekend to avoid a government shutdown by passing funding, which also expires at midnight Monday.

There is no controversy about the veterans’ program extensions, which passed the House by a 408-0 vote and passed the Senate on Monday by voice vote. The House and Senate veterans’ affairs committees had intended to include the extensions in an omnibus veterans’ bill but were unable to reach consensus.
