Consumer Watch: Mobile discounts and more at military stores

Shoppers with iPhones can download a new app to access their commissary rewards card account on the go.

Customers can select coupons and review clipped, redeemed and expired coupons. Card users also can get alerts based on their purchases, notices when new coupons are available, and reminders when clipped coupons are about to expire.

To download the free app, search the app store for Commissary Rewards. An Android app is planned for sometime in 2014.

To enroll in the rewards card program, pick up a card at your local commissary, then register it online. Coupons can be downloaded before you shop or, with the mobile app, while you shop.

Even though defense budget cuts have canceled case lot sales this year, many other sales are still happening. For example, on Sept. 18 and Sept. 25, items such as some juices, cereals and frozen meals, will be half off. And through Sept. 25, Unilever will offer coupons for its brands, such as Ragu, Lipton and Skippy.

Exchange offers DISH discount

Authorized military exchange customers in the continental U.S. can add another option as they comparison shop for TV service: subscribing to the DISH Network through the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.

Exchange shoppers can subscribe to DISH online at; by calling 866-762-2359; or by visiting the mobile center kiosk at their exchange on an Army or Air Force installation. Because all authorized shoppers can shop at any exchange, this program is available to those in all service branches.

Discounts are offered for the first 12 months of service on any TV package, plus a $100 exchange gift card. The military discount is an extra $10 off the national discount price. After the first 12 months, the price goes back up to the regular cost, minus both the military and national discounts.
