Retired sailor detained after 'suspicious individual' reports at Norfolk facility

Officials detained a 25-year-old retired sailor Wednesday at Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, Va., following reports of a “suspicious individual” on base.

The Virginian-Pilot reported that the incident prompted officials at the facility to evacuate two buildings and close its gates for two hours.

Navy Region Mid-Atlantic spokeswoman Beth Baker said the retired sailor used a valid ID to get on base, but she did not know whether he is a Navy employee. A witness reported that the man was wearing a backpack, though Baker said there was no indication he was carrying a weapon.

Base security and Naval Criminal Investigative Service officers interviewed the man Wednesday evening, Baker said.

NSA Hampton Roads spokeswoman Katisha Draughn-Farguada confirmed the suspect’s name and retired Navy status, but could not provide more details. He is still being detained, Draughn-Farguada said.

About 6,000 people work at NSA Hampton Roads, which is home to several commands, including Fleet Forces Command, Submarine Force Atlantic and Naval Surface Force Atlantic.

The decision to close the gates and evacuate buildings was not influenced by Monday’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, Baker said.
