Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling has closed its entrance gates and ordered on-base personnel to shelter in place following a mass shooting at the nearby Washington Navy Yard.

But Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling spokesman Joe Cirone said there has been no shooting or other emergency situation at the joint base. Emergency personnel at the base responded to a report of shots fired at the base’s Bellevue Housing area and confirmed the reports were unfounded.A spokeswoman for Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department said the department had received and investigated a report of a shooting at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, but found there was no shooting.

In a release issued late Monday morning, JBAB Commander Navy Capt. Anthony Calandra said the joint base will remain on lockdown until the Navy Yard is secured. At least two shooters are believed to be responsible for the shootings of 12 people, four of whom are dead at the Navy Yard, according to posts on Twitter from Navy Capt. Ed Buclatin, director of public affairs for Navy Installations Command there. .

The northern portion of Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling is across the Anacostia River from the Navy Yard.

“Immediately after receiving a report of an active shooter at the Washington Navy Yard, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling instituted additional security measures, including temporarily securing the installation,” the base’s release said. “JBAB, like all military bases, has a robust active shooter plan of action, which is exercised often to ensure security and other emergency personnel remain well trained.”
