Campbell Barracks in Heidelberg, Germany, officially closed Friday after six decades as the headquarters of U.S. Army Europe.

The barracks named for Staff Sgt. Charles L. Campbell was closed in a ceremony attended by U.S. Army commanders and German dignitaries.

“Together we have seen the collapse of the Berlin Wall ... the re-emergence of a unified Germany, side by side through our years here in Heidelberg,” Lt. Gen. Donald M. Campbell, USAREUR commanding general, said at the ceremony, according to an Army release.

“The changing political-military environment in the U.S., Europe, and around the world has produced a transformed, but more capable U.S. Army Europe team here in Germany and around the world,” he said.

USAREUR’s presence in Heidelberg is now ended, nearly 70 years after U.S. Army’s 7th Army Headquarters moved from Augsburg Germany, to Heidelberg. Early this year, USAREUR headquarters relocated to Clay Kaserne in Wiesbaden as part of the Army’s transformation in Europe.

At the ceremony, the mayor of Heidelberg paid tribute to the U.S. Army’s long history in his country.

“Since World War II, more than 15 million U.S. Soldiers and their families have served and lived in Germany, said Lord Mayor of the City of Heidelberg Dr. Eckart Würzner, quoted in the Army release. “It’s a strong and true friendship between millions of people on both sides of the Atlantic, which is why our transatlantic connection will remain strong in the future.”
