HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — An 18-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to strangling a teenager found by a Long Island footbridge.
Maxwell Sherman was arraigned Sunday on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Lauren Daverin, also 18.
Newsday reported that Daverin was married to Air Force Airman 1st Class Kashawn Gresham, who is stationed in Louisiana.
The Long Beach man is being held without bail pending his next court appearance Wednesday.
Newsday reported that his attorney, Jenna Suppon, requested what she called “reasonable” bail for Sherman.
The criminal complaint says Daverin was strangled. She was found Thursday by friends near the footbridge over Merrick Road in Rockville Center.
Nassau County police wouldn’t say whether the Lynbrook woman knew her attacker or was attacked at random.
