Jamieson (Air Force)
The Air Force brigadier general who was the deputy commander of the organization running prisons in Afghanistan during the accidental burning of Korans last year has been reassigned again.
Brig. Gen. Veralinn “Dash” Jamieson served as the No. 2 at Combined Joint Interagency Task Force 435 in Kabul and was reassigned in November to be the special assistant to the deputy chief of staff for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance at the Pentagon. Today, the Air Force announced that Jamieson has been reassigned tobe director of intelligence at Headquarters Air Combat Command at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va.
Jamieson was initially reassigned from the task force in Kabul during an ongoing investigation into the accidental burning of the Korans. The task force provides oversight and control of U.S. detention operations in Afghanistan, which included the prison where troops had removed Korans and other Islamic texts believed to contain extremist messages. Prison officials later burned the texts as garbage.
The burning sparked protests across Afghanistan, leading to the deaths of at least 30 people. Six U.S. service members were killed, including Air Force Lt. Col. John Darin Loftis, who was shot by an employee at the Afghan ministry. The burning led to nonjudicial punishment for six soldiers involved.
A military official who asked not to be named said the Defense Department inspector general is investigating the incident. An IG spokeswoman said Aug. 22 that the office cannot comment on whether an investigation is underway.
Other assignments announced Aug. 20 are:
■ Brig. Gen. Bradford Shwedo, currently the director of intelligence at ACC, will be the director of capability and resource integration at headquarters U.S. Cyber Command at Fort Meade, Md.
■ Brig. Gen. John Dolan, the current commander of Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan and commander of the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing, will be assistant deputy commander of U.S. Air Forces Central Command and assistant vice commander of the 9th Air Expeditionary Task Force, Air Combat Command, at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C.
