Policy updates for physical training expected last month are not yet finalized, so the Air Force bought itself more time.

The service’s physical training guidance memorandum, Air Force Instruction 10-248, has been updated every six months since July 2010, when the current standards went into effect. The guidance was last updated in January and was set to expire in July. On Aug. 2, Lt. Gen. Darrell Jones, deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services, signed a guidance with just one change: to extend the rules outlined in the current memo for one year.

“The policy changed to allow guidance memos to remain in place for a year, so they simply updated it for the longest period of time allowed, same as they’ve done in the past,” Air Force spokeswoman Capt. Erika Yepsen said in an e-mail.

But an update to the PT guidance will likely come sooner than August 2014. Changes to PT rules are in the final stages and are expected to be announced soon, Yepsen said.

The Air Force also is still deciding whether to make any changes to the waist measurement portion of the test. Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks. Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James Cody announced a six-month review in February, and had said he expected a decision in July.
