FORT DRUM, N.Y. — An Army soldier is facing murder and other charges following an investigation of his 4-year-old stepson’s death at northern New York’s Fort Drum.

Authorities say 31-year-old Staff Sgt. Raheem Hollis of Newark, N.J., was charged last week with murder, manslaughter, false official statements, assault and obstruction of justice. The case will be prosecuted in the military justice system.

Hollis is accused of attacking Michael Sanders at their home on the post near Watertown. The child died Dec. 10.

A spokesman for the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command didn’t initially return a call Tuesday for information about how the child was injured or the next steps in the prosecution.

Hollis is a combat engineer with the 10th Mountain Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team. He arrived at Fort Drum in August 2012.
