FAIRBANKS, ALASKA — Alaska State Troopers say searchers have recovered the body of a 32-year-old man believed to have drowned at the Chena Lakes Recreation Area.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says the man traveled too far from shore Sunday evening and realized he couldn’t get back.
Troopers the man’s body was recovered Monday afternoon.
Army officials say the man was an active duty soldier based at Fort Wainwright.
Troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain says the man started calling for help but he went under before anyone could reach him.
Troopers say the man had gone within 200 yards from shore and was not wearing a personal flotation device.
Authorities launched a search of the area Sunday evening.
The man’s name was not immediately released.
