NEWBURGH, N.Y. — The family of a World War I veteran from New York has been given a Purple Heart medal 95 years after he was wounded in battle.

U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney delivered the honor to descendants of Corp. William B. Tiebout during a ceremony Friday at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Society in Newburgh.

The Brooklyn-born Tiebout enlisted in the National Guard in 1916 and served with the Mexican Border Service before enlisting in the Army as a corporal in 1918.

He was wounded in the legs by shrapnel during a battle in Belgium and injured again by a German airplane strafing his hospital.

Tiebout died in 1977.

The historic society is on the site where Gen. George Washington originated the Badge of Military Merit, which later became the Purple Heart.
