HONOLULU — A Navy admiral will hand over to the Japanese government a Japanese soldier’s flag that his late uncle picked up at the end of World War II.
Rear Adm. James Caldwell will give the flag to the Japanese consul general in Honolulu, Toyoei Shigeeda, on Friday. He will ask Shigeeda to return the flag to the soldier’s family.
The consulate says the soldier’s family and friends wrote good luck messages on the flag before the soldier left home for military duty.
Caldwell’s uncle, Jay V. Chase, served in the Navy during the war.
Caldwell is commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet submarine forces.
