After Sgt. Kyle Osborn died in Afghanistan in September, his family knew it was up to them to keep his name alive.

Tuesday night at the Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds the Osborns dedicated an award in honor of their son who spent 10 years showing cattle.

The award, titled the “Sgt. Kyle Bruce Osborn 100 percent and then some Memorial Award,” was intended for a 4-H member who did just that.

The Osborns, along with a committee of fellow cattlemen, chose 18-year-old Ross House whom they believed exemplified the hard work and dedication as shown by Kyle during 4-H tenure.

Creigh Osborn, Kyle’s father, said House stood out during the selection process.

“There was one person who worked 100 percent at the project, thoroughly, and helped others,” Creigh said. “He’s just a very deserving individual.”

Kyle’s younger brother, Kade, 11, and sister Katlyn, 14, presented the award.

“I’m completely honored,” said House, who knew Kyle through school and 4-H.

“I feel I don’t represent his place at all because he was such a good man, but I’m honored by the family to be the first one they picked.”

The award came with $250 for House to put toward education.

A group of cattlemen also came up with the idea to dedicate the entire day of showing cattle in Kyle’s memory, Creigh said.

“We’re proud he made an impact on the fair,” Creigh said.
