A fisherman caught a tuna so massive it capsized his boat, sending him overboard. Fortunately, the Coast Guard was soon on-scene to assist.

Anthony Wichman, 54, hooked a 230-pound Ahi early Friday off the shore of Port Allen, Kauai, Hawaii. As he was reeling her in, his 14-boot boat capsized and he was pulled underwater, his leg caught in the line.

Wichman was able to free himself from the wire and climb on top the hull. He used his cell phone to call his wife, who notified authorities. The Coast Guard got a GPS position from Wichman’s cell phone and sent aid.

A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point retrieved Wichman and transported him to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, according to a news release.

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Kauai stayed with the capsized boat until two of Wichman’s friends showed up to retrieve it. That’s when they found out the Ahi was still on the line. His friends reeled in the fish and towed Wichman’s boat back to shore at Port Allen.

“Mr. Wichman was delivered safely to shore with minimal injuries and he and his friends will have quite the indisputable fish tale to tell,” said Lt. Jessica Mickelson, Sector Honolulu’s spokesperson in a press release.
