SAN DIEGO — A federal jury in Southern California has convicted a former Marine Corps sergeant of paying thousands of dollars in bribes for fraudulent lodging reimbursements.

The jury deliberated for less than 30 minutes before returning a guilty verdict Tuesday against 32-year-old Luis Gilbert Menchaca.

Prosecutors say Menchaca and another former reservist submitted thousands of dollars in false travel and lodging claims at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

Menchaca teamed with an administrative worker to receive housing payments from the scheme in return for bribes.

In total, he submitted $38,000 in false lodging claims, and the funds were direct-deposited into his bank account.

Menchaca is due for sentencing Oct. 4.

Co-conspirator Manuel Ramos-Padilla pleaded guilty in April and is due for sentencing Aug. 9.
