An airman at Buckley Air Force Base, Colo., was killed and a second wounded in a shooting in downtown Denver early Saturday.

Buckley identified the victim who died as Airman 1st Class Shaquille Hargrove, 19, a 2nd Space Warning Squadron satellite systems operator. The wounded airman, who was not identified, was treated and released from a hospital, according to a base news release.

The shooting occurred about 2:15 a.m. at 15th and Market Streets. Police have asked anyone with information — including photos or video footage — to call Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.

The 460th Space Wing commander Col. Dan Wright said the area where the shooting occurred is temporarily off-limits to airmen “to allow investigators to conduct a thorough investigation,” according to the release.

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations is coordinating with Denver police, it said.

Wright issued a statement offering condolences to Hargrove’s family and friends. “Our airmen are the greatest assets in the Air Force, and we lost a valuable member of Team Buckley this weekend,” it said.

Chapel staff, military family life consultants and mental health professionals are available to anyone at Buckley, the release said.

“Taking care of our airmen and families is a top priority, and we’re doing all we can to tend to the needs of Airman Hargrove’s friends, family and fellow airmen,” Wright said.

The base said it would release more information as it becomes available.
