Airman earns 'pro' status in fitness competition

Many airmen worry about an upcoming PT test, but this airman doesn’t just perform for his leadership — he also performs for the judges.

Second Lt. David Simon from the 45th Operations Support Squadron, Patrick Air Force Base, Fla., recently placed second overall in the “muscle model” category during a World Beauty Fitness and Fashion competition held in Florida.

“Since joining the Air Force, I’ve been pretty much working out consistently,” Simon said. He enlisted in 2000.

“I never really changed anything with my weight lifting repetitions. I just changed my nutrition and diet [to prep for the competition].”

Simon, who weighs around 205 pounds, bench presses 315 pounds on a daily, if not weekly, basis. He changed his diet two months before the competition.

“My leadership motivated me to do this ... they said I had the look, I had the frame, and I had my reservations because I’m 30, but then I looked into it and decided it could be worth trying,” he said.

The WBFF is more about fitness and modeling rather than body building. Simon said the one-day competition was judged based on physical appearance and stage presence. With his second place win, which gives him “pro status,” he now qualifies to go on to the WBFF “Pros in Vegas” Worlds Championship at Planet Hollywood Resorts on Aug. 23.

He plans to keep the same prep: eating every three hours with a diet of 6 to 8 ounces of protein, 6 ounces of carbohydrates and half a cup of vegetables, in addition to his routine workout.

Simon said he encourages other airmen and military members to look into the competition series because it drives you to do well in other areas of fitness.

“As the honor safety rep [at the base fitness center], I do my best to tell other airmen to be aware of their workouts, what to use, and this way, we really keep each other motivated. Use the fitness center and stay active ... that’s what will get you through the next PT test.”

Simon, a range control officer at Cape Canaveral, is working to join the official Air Force track team.

“Being in the military, we have this lifestyle to stay fit,” Simon said. “My dream job? Yeah, I would love to have an office in the gym, but I love my Air Force job as well.”
