Air Force halts most travel to Egypt

The Air Force on Wednesday ordered most of its personnel to stop traveling to Egypt.

Permanent change-of-station moves and most temporary duty assignments for both military and civilian personnel are on hold until further notice, according to an Air Force release. The Air Force did not say how many airmen and civilians will be affected by the stop movement order.

The State Department on July 3 ordered non-emergency U.S. personnel and family members to leave Egypt, as the Egyptian military forced the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi. State’s order led the Air Force to cancel most of its travel to Egypt.

Some affected airmen may be authorized additional temporary lodging allowance, the release said.

The Air Force said airmen stationed at Egypt who are currently on leave or temporary duty may return to their bases with the approval of their commander. Also, the Air Force will consider voluntary return from overseas extension requests.

But airmen based in the U.S. who are projected to move to Egypt, and those who have out-processed but have not yet left their current duty station, must not go to Egypt, the Air Force said.

Airmen stationed overseas who have a projected assignment to Egypt and a July or August return from overseas date, who have not yet departed the overseas area, must check with their current base personnel section on how to proceed.
