Three selection boards will meet late this summer to consider basic-branch lieutenant colonels and promotable majors of the Army Competitive Category for assignment to battalion-level command and key billet positions that become vacant in fiscal 2015.
To qualify for the upcoming boards, officers must be lieutenant colonels with an O-5 date of rank of Sept. 11, 2011, or later, or be majors on a selection list for lieutenant colonel.
Under new eligibility rules issued by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno, officers are given three, rather than four, years of eligibility each for battalion and brigade command consideration. For battalion command, eligibility begins the year an officer is promoted to lieutenant colonel.
Officers are not eligible for board consideration if they previously have commanded at the lieutenant colonel level or served in an O-5 key billet.
Officers will be selected for command in four categories: operations, strategic support, recruiting and training, and installation.
Selections for fiscal 2015 active-component assignments will be made by boards as follows:
■ Maneuver, Fires and Effects, Sept. 9-25.
■ Operations Support, Sept. 10-18.
■ Force Sustainment, Sept. 9-25.
Officer evaluation reports submitted for these boards must arrive at Human Resources Command by Aug. 30. The required thru date for Code 9 complete-the-record reports is June 1, 2013. Officers can use the online My Board File system to review their official file from July 22 to Sept. 4.
Officers selected by the boards should expect to command or serve in a key billet position for 24 months. Once the selection list is approved by the chief of staff, officers may get command to fill unexpected vacancies that open before Oct. 1, 2014. The available subcategories for the upcoming boards are shown above right.
