Coast Guard taps new Gulf cleanup coordinator

NEW ORLEANS — A new Coast Guard official has been assigned to coordinate the federal governmentís cleanup efforts following BPís 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Coast Guard announced Tuesday that Capt. Thomas Sparks has taken over as the federal on-scene coordinator for the Gulf Coast Incident Management Team.

Sparks replaces Capt. Duke Walker, who started the job in November 2011. Walkerís next assignment is commander of the Coast Guardís sector based in Mobile, Ala.
