YORKTOWN, VA. — The Navy Submarine Torpedo Facility in Yorktown has a new commanding officer.
Cmdr. Eric Mason relieved Cmdr. Eugene LaCoste on Wednesday. LaCoste had led the command since July 2011.
The naval facility builds the MK 48 heavyweight torpedo, which is a weapon carried by all Navy submarines. The torpedo facility also includes a training center.
More than 150 sailors and civilians are stationed at the Yorktown facility. Among other things, they serve as expert engine builders, electronics technicians, ordnance handlers, maintenance staff and test-equipment technicians.
Before reporting to NSTF Yorktown, Mason served as the deputy director for current operations at U.S. Fleet Forces Command. Mason is originally from Baltimore and enlisted in the Navy in 1991.
