2 Nevada guardsmen killed in plane crash

LAS VEGAS — Authorities announced Tuesday that two men who died over the weekend in a single-engine plane crash near Boulder City Municipal Airport were Nevada National Guardsmen.

Las Vegas resident Sgt. 1st Class Joseph Edwards, 41, was a helicopter repairman with 11 years of militaryservice, and North Las Vegas resident Pfc. Cody Allen Hall, 23, worked as an aircraft electrician, Guardofficials said. Hall had just finished his first year in the military.

Both were assigned to a security and support company based out of the North Las Vegas Airport.

“Each man stepped forward to serve his state and our country and their loss will be felt throughout Nevada,” Gov. Brian Sandoval said in a statement Tuesday.

Adjutant General Brig. Gen. Bill Burks called it a “very somber day” for the Nevada National Guard.

“With Nevada Guard units deployed around the world in combat, we remain mindful of the potential for casualties; to suffer two casualties in an accident right here in Nevada is especially shocking and tragic for our organization,” his statement read.

The Federal Aviation Administration reported their plane was attempting to land when it went down Sunday afternoon about 4 miles west of the air field. The National Weather Service reported gusts up to 35 mph about the same time.

The plane wasn’t a military aircraft, and both men were off-duty when the crash happened.

Federal officials are investigating the cause.
