A diver from the submarine tender Frank Cable died June 19 during pier-side diving operations at Naval Base Guam.
Navy Diver 3rd Class (DV) Robert N. Dotzler, 22, of Berkeley, Calif., was found unconscious during diving operations at Alpha Pier, the Navy confirmed.
He was not diving, but rather observing other divers from the water’s surface in a “snorkeling-like role.”
The official didn’t say whether Dotzler was using any of the breathing apparatus in this role, or if he was actually using a snorkel as his breathing means while on the surface.
When the other divers surfaced, they noticed Dotzler was missing and located him at the bottom of the harbor, where he was pulled from the water unconscious and later pronounced dead at Guam’s Naval Hospital.
