Lt. Gen. Frank Gorenc has been nominated for his fourth star and to become the next commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and U.S. Air Forces Africa.

“I’m honored and deeply humbled by the nomination to serve as the next commander, U.S. Air Forces Europe; commander, U.S. Air Forces Africa; commander, Allied Air Command; and director, Joint Air Power Competence Centre, Ramstein Air Base, Germany,” Gorenc said in a statement on Tuesday.

“If confirmed, it would be a privilege to return to Europe and serve our Airmen and our many partners in the region. In the meantime, I remain focused on my current duties as Assistant Vice Chief of Staff and Director, Air Staff, Headquarters U.S. Air Force.”

A 1979 Air Force Academy graduate, Gorenc currently works at the Pentagon as the assistant vice chief of staff of the Air Force, according to his official biography.

He is a command pilot with more than 4,500 flying hours under his belt in both manned and remotely piloted aircraft. He has flown the F-15C, T-38A, MQ-B, C-21 and UH-1N helicopter.

Gorenc has risen rapidly through the ranks. He became a brigadier general in October 2005, a major general in February 2008 and a lieutenant general in August 2009. He got his first star while commanding the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing at Balad Air Base, Iraq, and later served as director of air and space operations for Air Combat Command and then commander of 3rd Air Force in Germany.

His military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters and the Bronze Star.

If confirmed, Gorenc would replace Philip Breedlove, who recently became the head of U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

“I was very pleased to hear that General Gorenc was nominated for this position. His experience and expertise make him exactly the right choice for this command,” Breedlove said in a statement.
