Tricare is waiving required referrals for specialty care and emergency prescription refills for its beneficiaries in Oklahoma affected by the May 20 tornado.
Officials announced Friday they will waive a requirement for Tricare Prime in the Tinker Air Force Base area to obtain authorization before seeing a specialist as recommended by their primary care providers. They will not be charged a penalty fee for not having the required referral authorizations.
Tricare also is temporarily suspending an “emergency refill too soon” waiver that is required when a patient seeks to refill medications before they have used their current supplies.
The waiver for having to obtain a specialty care referral is effective from May 20 through June 19; the emergency refill waiver is effective through June 17 in five Oklahoma counties: Cleveland, Lincoln, McClain, Oklahoma and Pottawatomie.
More information is available on Tricare’s Oklahama disaster alert page.
“Each [waiver] is designed to ensure military families and retirees have access to health care services and medications during this stressful time,” Tricare officials said.
