'Administrative error' forces U.S. plane to land in Indonesia

A U.S. military passenger plane was able to leave Indonesia today after an administrative error forced the plane to land and be held overnight.

A military Dornier 328 turboprop aircraft with a five-person crew traveling from Sri Lanka to Singapore entered Indonesian airspace, but flight planners did not request a diplomatic clearance to enter the country and land for a scheduled refueling stop at Sultan Iskandar Muda airport in Banda Aveh, Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. Cathy Wilkinson said. When the plane entered the country’s airpsace, at about 2 p.m. local time, Indonesian Air Force officials contacted it and requested clearances, according to the Jakarta Post.

The plane was told to land at its scheduled airport and followed orders to land at the planned airport, according to the Post. The crew explained the administrative oversight to Indonesian authorities and was cleared for flight today.

Air Force Special Operations Command flies 17 Dornier 328s as “nonstandard aviation assets” to operate airlift for Army Special Forces or Navy Special Forces, AFSOC Commander Lt. Gen. Eric Fiel said in a speech at an Air Force Association conference last fall.
