Air Force may reassess TA funding in fiscal 2014The Air Force will release a master sergeant promotion list Thursday that will reflect the lowest promotion rate in more than a decade.
Of the 20,528 eligible technical sergeants, 3,841 were selected for promotion to master sergeant, for a promotion rate of 18.71 percent, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced today.
The selection rate is lower than the 19.85 selection rate of 2006, when the Air Force set off on a path to reduce the force by 40,000. The promotion rate rebounded to nearly 25 percent in 2007 and has stayed above 20 percent since — climbing to 33.8 percent in 2011. The promotion rate last year, when 5,464 of the 19,809 technical sergeants were selected, was 27.58 percent.
The average score for those selected this year is 350.21, up from last year’s average of 332.85. Selectees’ time in grade is 4.38 years, down from 4.43 last year, and time in service for those selected this year is 15.27 years, down from 15.58 years in 2012.
Promotion fitness exam and specialty knowledge test scores increased over last year: Selectees’ average PFE score is 82.76, compared with 69.71 in 2012, and the average SKT score is 68.43, up from 60.42 last year.
Following official commander notification, the list of master sergeant selectees will be released Thursday at 8 a.m. Central time.
Those selected for master sergeant will be promoted according to their promotion sequence number beginning in August. Selections are tentative until the 10-day data verification process is complete. Airmen will be contacted if their selection is in question, Air Force officials said in a release.
