Special Warfare Operator 3rd Class (SEAL) Jonathan Kaloust was killed in a training accident Wednesday night at Fort Knox, Ky., a spokesman from Naval Special Warfare Group 2 said.

The accident at the Army base also injured seven other sailors, Lt. David Lloyd said — five SEALs, one explosive ordnance disposal technician and one sailor in an unspecified community. All seven were treated and released.

Kaloust was killed when his Humvee overturned during a training exercise, according to a Navy news release. The exercise was part of tactical training and the vehicles were traveling in a convoy, but Lloyd declined to give any further details, saying the training is considered sensitive.

Kaloust was assigned to an East Coast-based SEAL team out of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Va., the release said. The 23-year-old from Massapequa, N.Y., joined the Navy in March 2011. He joined his unit in December.

Fort Knox, about 50 miles southwest of Louisville, has been used as a Navy training ground since World War II. Naval architects tested mock-ups of ships at the inland post before the actual vessels were used in combat.

The Navy had five units and about 247 sailors involved in external training support at the post in 2011.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
