The Air Force has taken another fitness campaign under its wing, and you can access your next workout either online, in person or on DVD.
These resources, including Operational Fitness Program, Xtreme Wednesday Workouts, Air Force Fitness DVDs and the Fitness on Request kiosks are available to all airmen, retirees and families, through base fitness and sports centers and physical training units.
“I think in a social involvement, competing with each other can help improve personal performance in fitness,” said Scott Nunnelly, AFPC fitness program manager, in an interview with Air Force Times. “We worked with a number of people within fitness advisory boards, different commands and exercise physiologists to generate a program that will help airmen maintain fitness throughout the year,” he said.
The idea
The goal is to help airmen achieve a healthy lifestyle on or off the clock. While the workouts aren’t mandatory, airmen can devote as much time as they want to training using either program.
Three-levels of fitness
Operational Fitness Program’s Level One is composed of three to four weekly or biweekly routines that progressively become more difficult. The workouts build upon endurance and progress over six weeks. “It’s a good workout for airmen who need help passing their fitness test or just want to take it slow,” Nunnelly said.
Level Two adds body-weight training or weights. “It’s a lot less rigid than Level One, and airmen have a bit more variety with their workout,” Nunnelly said.
Level Three: Individuals work at an advanced fitness level, with more than 90 challenging routines that incorporate a total-body workout.
Online and on the air
The program is easily accessible on www.usafservices.com. “It has been in the making for almost a year now, but officially kicked off for the spring season,” Nunnelly said. The Air Force Personnel Center’s services team also joined forces with the Pentagon Channel and developed 20 new fitness shows for the “Fit for Duty” television series. The shows, Xtreme Wednesday Workouts, are on the Pentagon Channel website at www.pentagonchannel.mil/.
Take it with you
Airmen can download videos — on iPad, laptop and smartphone — to build a customized workout library. The shows are also available through some cable providers. Additionally, the 20 workouts will be developed into Air Force Fitness DVDs and will be available to check out at bases by late spring.
Coming to a base near you
The next phase in this initiative is to deliver the Fitness on Request
Kiosks to more than 60 installations. “The Air Force has purchased 86, and depending on the size of the installation and number of fitness centers, they could get more,”
Nunnelly said. The kiosks, to arrive by late summer, will supplement existing group exercise programs
or installations that can no longer fund their group exercise contract. The workouts will range from
15 minutes to an hour and will be updated every quarter, Nunnelly said.
