Battle brewing over slain soldier’s bench memorial

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Friends of a Fort Carson soldier and his pregnant wife who were killed in a home invasion in January are protesting a decision by Colorado Springs park officials to remove a bench honoring the couple.

Parks board member Dan Lewis said Thursday that plans to remove the bench on the Manitou Springs Incline path are insensitive. The bench was carried up the path that leads to Pikes Peak in pieces by friends of David and Whitney Dunlap.

David Dunlap was a staff sergeant and helicopter mechanic for Fort Carson’s combat aviation brigade. His wife was pregnant at the time of the murders.

According to KRDO-TV, park officials are concerned because the bench was put up without permission.
