FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Officials at Fort Bragg have called off an annual July Fourth celebration, citing budgetary concerns.

Lt. Gen. Daniel B. Allyn said in a release issued Thursday that the $120,000 in overtime costs make the festival too expensive to put on this year. Allyn said Fort Bragg needs to prioritize its spending in advance of civilian furloughs and budget cuts.

Officials say the annual event has been held for more than 30 years and typically draws more than 50,000 people from the area.

Bragg officials said they’re also reviewing other programs and services and have made some changes, such as canceling weekend controlled burns and mowing and landscaping contracts.
