GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Malmstrom Air Force Base houses that would have been demolished are instead being moved to the Fort Belknap Reservation.
The Great Falls Tribune reported that 32 houses have been moved so far, and 38 additional homes are scheduled to begin transfer this week.
Relocation program manager Mark Coleman said the Air Force sets how many houses can be on base, and the homes being moved were surplus.
Relocating them saves the base money that would have been spent demolishing them and fills a need for housing on the reservation.
Most are three-bedroom homes; 20 are four-bedroom houses.
The tribe is covering the costs of relocation and of setting up the homes on the reservation.
It costs between $8,000 and $14,000 to move a home.
