General assignments, nominations announced

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel announced March 20 that the President has made the following nominations:

Air Force Lt. Gen. John E. Hyten has been nominated for assignment as commander, Fourteenth Air Force (Air Forces Strategic), Air Force Space Command, and commander, Joint Functional Component Command for Space, U.S. Strategic Command, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. Hyten is currently serving as vice commander, Air Force Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.

Air Force Lt. Gen. Susan J. Helms has been nominated for assignment as vice commander, Air Force Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Colo. Helms is currently serving as commander, Fourteenth Air Force (Air Forces Strategic-Space), Air Force Space Command, and commander, Joint Functional Component Command for Space, U.S. Strategic Command, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh announced the following general officer assignments March 15:

Maj. Gen. William J. Bender, commander of the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., will become deputy director of operations for the Office of Security Cooperation-Iraq in Baghdad.

Maj. Gen. Paul T. Johnson, deputy U.S. military representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Military Committee at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, will become director of operational capability requirements in the Air Force’s operations, plans and requirements office at the Pentagon.

Maj. Gen. Michael A. Keltz, director of strategic planning and policy, J-5, at U.S Pacific Command headquarters in Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, will become director of intelligence, operations and nuclear integration at Air Education and Training Command headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas.

Maj. Gen. Frederick H. Martin, deputy director of operations for the Office of Security Cooperation-Iraq in Baghdad, will become commander of the U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J.

Maj. Gen. John F. Newell III, senior military adviser to the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan/Pakistan on the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, will become director of policy and planning, J-5, at U.S. Northern Command headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.

Maj. Gen. Timothy M. Zadalis, director of intelligence, operations and nuclear integration at Air Education and Training Command headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, will become commander of the 618th Air and Space Operations Center (Tanker Airlift Control Center) at Scott Air Force Base, Ill.

Brig. Gen. Thomas W. Bergeson, who has been selected for the rank of major general and is director of operational capability requirements in the Air Force operations, plans and requirements office at the Pentagon, will become director of the Air Force’s legislative liaison office at the Pentagon.

Brig. Gen. Timothy J. Leahy, who has been selected for the rank of major general and is commander of 23rd Air Force and director of operations for Air Force Special Operations Command, Hurlburt Field, Fla., will become director of operations, J-3, at U.S. Special Operations Command headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.

Brig. Gen. John M. Hicks, director of command, control, communications and cyber, J-6, at U.S. Pacific Command headquarters, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, will become commander of 23rd Air Force and director of operations for Air Force Special Operations Command at Hurlburt Field, Fla.

Col. Steven L. Basham, who has been selected for the rank of brigadier general and is chief of the Air Force’s House of Representatives Liaison Office at the Pentagon, will become deputy director of operations, plans and policy at Pacific Air Forces headquarters, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

Col. Patrick J. Doherty, who has been selected for the rank of brigadier general and is director of assignments at the Air Force Personnel Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, will become director of Air Force Services at the Pentagon.

Col. Richard M. Murphy, who has been selected for the rank of brigadier general and is special assistant to the commander of Air Education and Training Command at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, will become director of manpower, organization and resources, in the Air Force’s manpower, personnel and services office at the Pentagon.
