Judge postpones court-martial in toddler death

A judge has postponed a court-martial set to begin this morning in the case of a Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, airman accused of child endangerment and dereliction of duty in connection with the August death of a toddler.

Senior Airman Christopher Perez, of the 7th Security Forces Squadron, faces up to 10½ years in prison and a dishonorable discharge if convicted on charges he failed to report the maltreatment of three young children, one of whom died from long-term neglect. Perez was living with the children's mother, the wife of another Dyess senior airman deployed at the time of the child's death.

The military judge overseeing the case, Col. Donald Eller, granted a delay "to allow additional forensic analysis of electronic media," according to a news release from Dyess.

Perez is also facing a charge of adultery. He was in a sexual relationship with the children's mother, Tiffany Klapheke, according to testimony from his Article 32 hearing in November.

Tiffany Klapheke will stand trial in a civilian court in July on three counts of felony child neglect. Tamryn Klapheke, 22 months, was found unresponsive at her base home in August. An autopsy revealed she had suffered from malnutrition and dehydration.

A new court date had not been set this morning.
