For the first time in Air Force Academy history, a woman may be its superintendant.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today the nomination of Maj. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson to become the Academy's 19th superintendent.

Johnson is deputy chief of staff for operations and intelligence at NATO headquarters in Belgium. She has also been appointed for promotion to lieutenant general.

Johnson is a 1981 Academy graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in operations research. She earned her master's degree in politics and economics in 1983 as a Rhodes Scholar at Brasenose College, Oxford University, England. She is a command pilot with more than 3,600 hours in the C-141B, T-41C, KC-10A, KC-135R, C-5A, C-17A, T-37 and T-38.

In addition to her current NATO post, Johnson has held several joint assignments, including director of strategy, policy, programs and logistics at U.S. Transportation Command from July 2009 to July 2011; deputy director for information and cyberspace policy on the Joint Staff from December 2007 to June 2009; and Air Force aide to the president at the White House from May 1992 to June 1994.

Johnson would replace Lt. Gen. Michael Gould, who has been Academy superintendent since June 2009.

Four other general officer assignments also were announced today:

Maj. Gen. David W. Allvin, commander of Air Mobility Command's 618th Air and Space Operations Center (Tanker Airlift Control Center) at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., will become director of strategic planning in the office of the deputy chief of staff, strategic plans and programs, at the Pentagon.

Maj. Gen. Tod D. Wolters, who has been nominated for promotion to lieutenant general and is director, of the Air Force's legislative liaison office, will become commander of Twelfth Air Force (Air Forces Southern) at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz.

Brig. Gen James N. Post III, who has been nominated for promotion to major general and is deputy director of operations, plans and policy at Pacific Air Forces headquarters at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, will become director of operations at Air Combat Command at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va.

Col. Paul D. Nelson, who has been nominated for promotion to brigadier general and is vice commander of the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency at Fort George G. Meade, Md., will become deputy to the deputy chief of staff for intelligence at International Security Assistance Force headquarters and deputy director of operations and support, J2, at U.S. Central Command's U.S. Forces-Afghanistan in Kabul, Afghanistan.
