WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem family of a U.S. Air Force colonel who served in three wars now has the 22 medals that he earned.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported that Sen. Richard Burr presented the medals Tuesday to the family of Col. Ernest Holland, who died in 2010 at the age of 86.
His daughter, Bethanie Gauntt, decided after her mother died in April that she wanted to collect her father's medals. Burr said it's not unusual for WWII veterans to not have their medals.
Among the medals the family received were the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star.
Holland served in World War II and the wars in Korea and Vietnam.
