Lackland MTI sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison

A military training instructor who admitted to having sex with a recruit just before she left Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland for technical training was cleared Thursday of aggravated sexual assault, the most serious charge he'd faced during a three-day court-martial there.

Staff Sgt. Craig Leblanc will spend 2 years in prison and receive a dishonorable discharge for the 11 other charges and specifications he was convicted of, including obstruction of justice, making false official statements, adultery and having relationships with two other women who were technical trainees, said Brent Boller, a Lackland spokesman.

Leblanc had faced up to 22 years behind bars.

Military judge Col. Donald R. Eller Jr., who decided the case, could have found Leblanc guilty on a lesser included charge of wrongful sexual contact but did not, Boller said.

The government asked for a five-year sentence and a dishonorable discharge, Boller said. The defense called the dishonorable discharge too much and asked that Eller consider Leblanc's three children.

Earlier in the week, Leblanc said the Air Force chief of staff had unlawfully influenced the case when he told lawmakers last month that MTIs who have sexual relationships with recruits do not belong in the military. He asked the judge to dismiss all the charges against him.

Eller denied the motion.
