ANCHORAGE, Alaska The U.S. attorney's office says a Palmer, Alaska, man accused of illegally driving a pickup onto Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, then crashing through a closed gate to get out, has been charged with three federal crimes.

U.S. Attorney Karen Loeffler said Monday that 25-year-old Kyle Hansen has been charged with assaulting a federal officer, destruction of government property and illegally entering a military property.

Prosecutors said Hansen drove through the base's Boniface gate early Jan. 19.

That prompted a high-speed chase by security officers.

The government alleges that he tried to leave the base through another gate but when he found that exit blocked, he turned around and crashed through the closed Boniface gate, causing significant damage. Hansen is accused of striking one Air Force law enforcement officer and a law enforcement vehicle with his truck.
