Jury ousts Lackland training instructor

A jury this afternoon decided the latest military training instructor convicted in a sexual misconduct scandal at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland no longer belongs in the Air Force.

Staff Sgt. Donald Davis, who pleaded guilty to having a sexual relationship with a woman who graduated from basic to technical training, was sentenced to a bad conduct discharge, three months' hard labor and reduction to E-3, said Brent Boller, Lackland spokesman. Davis will not serve any jail time.

A day earlier, the jury of seven officers — six men and one woman — acquitted Davis of the most serious charges he faced: abusive sexual contact and assault and battery of a basic trainee.

The trainee accused Davis of calling her repeatedly into his office for closed-door workout sessions. She said he hugged her at one point and told her she could lower her pants in order for him to take better measurements.

Davis denied those charges but admitted to having a consensual sexual relationship with another woman, a technical trainee. Davis is the seventh MTI to stand trial in the scandal that has led to the investigations of dozens of trainers. Fifteen have been charged; two others were disciplined administratively. The six others to go to court-martial were found guilty on some or all of the charges they faced. Davis is the third to be kicked out of the service.

During the three-day trial, two witnesses testified for the prosecution — Davis' accuser and her best friend in basic training, Boller said. Four witnesses testified on behalf of the defense, including three of the accuser's fellow trainees.

The Air Force has responded to the scandal with dozens of changes to basic training, including adding more MTIs, toughening duty requirements and increasing the number of women in the job.
