Air Force Times staff writer Kristin Davis and senior video journalist Colin Kelly are headed to Afghanistan on an embed with the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing at Kandahar Air Field.
The two left Dover Air Force Base, Del., on Friday. They will cover the logistics of the anticipated drawdown of military troops from Afghanistan.
It's the first trip to Afghanistan for Davis, 31, an award-winning journalist who joined Air Force Times in February. Her beat has included covering the sexual misconduct cases within basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.
Kelly, 30, has traveled to Afghanistan three times to cover military operations. He embedded in 2009 and 2011 with Army and Air Force units, visiting Paktika, Kunar and Kandahar provinces, among other locations, and with the Marines in October 2012 while embedded with 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, out of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and other units.
