VA trademarks term ‘GI Bill'

The Department of Veterans Affairs has trademarked the phrase "GI Bill," in an effort to prevent private companies from misleading service members.

"Since the Post-9/11 GI Bill became law, there have been reports of aggressive and deceptive targeting of service members, veterans, and their families by some educational institutions," an April executive order from President Obama said.

Included among these practices was use of the term "GI Bill" in ways that federal officials said could lead vets to believe they were looking at official government information, when in fact they were reading material promoted, and paid for, by companies affiliated with a few particular schools.

In June, VA reached a settlement with the private owners of GIBill.com to take over that website, as part of the same effort.

VA is now developing terms of use for the phrase "GI Bill," to be issued within six months.

"We want to ensure the right balance with these new guidelines, so that our stakeholders can still promote [the] GI Bill and we can prohibit others from using it fraudulently," said Curtis Coy, VA's deputy undersecretary for economic opportunity.
