Anna Liba

Army daughter

My mother and father are in the military, and they both showed me how to open my eyes to the world they live in. Each night we talk about our days. My mom teaches comparative politics and my dad teaches physical education. When my dad went to Afghanistan, I felt really sad, and it opened my eyes to what other children feel like when their parents go away. When my dad was gone, I felt like something inside of me left and would come back in a year. But, I never broke down crying and I kept up hope. We Skyped almost every week, and he wrote us letters. I was really afraid that my dad would die, and I was especially afraid when he told me that two earthquakes went on when he was in his building. When I was young, I thought that serving was like a waitress serving you food, but now I know that serving is going into wars and battles, and saving people's lives, even. This affects my love of the United States because now I am really interested in what is happening in the nation. I am proud of my country for making the right decisions, and since everybody (and thing) cannot be perfect, for making wrong decisions, too. I think that our country can learn from our mistakes if we try.
