Air Force Space Command is investigating a Delta IV rocket malfunction during the launch of a GPS satellite Oct. 4.
AFSPC commander Gen. William Shelton has ordered an accident investigation board to investigate why a Delta IV RL-10B-2 upper stage engine failed to operate as expected during the launch. The launch was successful despite the malfunction, Shelton said in a release.
"The time-honored rigor and earnest process of an AIB will serve us well as we attempt to determine the root cause of this anomaly," Shelton said.
The Air Force will review all flight data to determine if the service should proceed with the next launch. The launch manifest schedule is being reviewed to determine the root cause of the malfunction.
