Air Force personnel officials are testing a new system that would allow airmen to submit their permanent change-of-station documents online.
The move would eliminate the need to gather up papers and take them to the base military personnel section.
"By centralizing the process, we expect to reduce workload on our airmen who must travel to the MPS for actions involving their PCS orders process … and our already overtasked base-level military personnel sections," said Mike Dickerson, spokesman for the Air Force Personnel Center.
Since the end of May, 100 officers and enlisted airmen at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, have been participating in the test, in which they scan and upload their PCS documents directly into the myPers website. The airmen received automated assignment notices by email that included lists of requirements and links to the personnel system, which airmen can use to digitally send required documents, such as out-processing checklists.
The test is expected to run through February before it expands.
"The ultimate end goal is to identify logistics, manpower, technology and funding to centralize this process for the entire Air Force," Dickerson said.
A four-person team at the Total Force Service Center in San Antonio is using a multifunction case management computer system to do the work often conducted by five or six personnelists at each Air Force base. That means communicating with airmen virtually from San Antonio and reviewing and authenticating PCS orders and documentation all from one location. And because airmen can interact with and ask questions of service center technicians every day of the week and any time of the day, airmen in the test have headed down to the local MPS only for their final out-processing appointment.
"We are making it easier for airmen to get their PCS orders by removing the base MPS from the equation," said Lt. Col. Jenise Carroll, TFSC-SA operations division chief, in a Sept. 17 news release.
The San Antonio-based service center has been authenticating more than 92,000 orders and 23,000 amendments since October 2011 and engaging airmen on the front end of the workload, said Col. James Davis, director of the center, in the release. Issuing automated assignment notifications and having documents uploaded directly was the next logical step, he said.
The test will eventually be expanded to the entire Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph area, Davis said.
