SALT LAKE CITY — Thousands of people attended the change-of-command ceremony at Camp Williams that included a celebration of Maj. Gen. Brian Tarbet's retirement after 12 years as adjutant general of the Utah National Guard.
The 63-year-old Tarbet handed off the colors to Maj. Gen. Jefferson Burton during Saturday's ceremony in the southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley where the camp's parade field is being renamed Tarbet Field.
Tarbet's 36-year Guard career included coordinating the work of 5,000 troops from 26 states who provided security at the 2002 Olympics.
Gen. Frank Glass, the chief of the National Guard Bureau recently made a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Tarbet is "one of the best the military has to offer."
Gov. Gary Herbert said he served with "humility, commitment and honor."
