Selection rate declines

The Air Force has released the E-7 promotion list, which has the names of 5,464 airmen who were selected for promotion to master sergeant.

Of the 19,809 technical sergeants eligible for promotion, 27.58 percent were selected to advance, a sharp downturn from last year's 33.8 percent.

In fiscal 2011, the promotion rate had jumped from 24.9 percent to 33.8 percent. An Air Force official told Air Force Times in January that the increase was due to a smaller eligibility pool caused by high-year tenure limitations.

But the eligibility pools for fiscals 2011 and 2012 are roughly the same. The Air Force was unable to explain the reason for the drop by deadline.

The airmen selected for promotion had on average 4.42 years time in grade and 15.58 years of total service. The average score of 332.85 was based on the following averages:

133.84 for enlisted performance reports

11.12 for decorations

69.71 for the Promotion Fitness Exam

60.42 for the Specialty Knowledge Test

33.34 for time in service

33.58 for time in grade

Under the high-year tenure limitations, technical sergeants must be promoted to master sergeant by the time they have served 20 years, or they will be forced to leave the Air Force.
