GALLUP, N.M. — A Patriot 3 missile was fired from southern New Mexico's White Sands Missile Range at a Hera missile launched from Fort Wingate near Gallup, but officials don't yet know whether the high-altitude intercept was successful.
The Hera was launched from northwestern New Mexico at 7:25 a.m.
Its booster dropped into an evacuated safety zone near Datil on the flight.
That's according to an information officer for the launch, Drew Hamilton, who watched the launch from Red Rock State Park near Gallup.
Roadblocks also were in effect in the Fort Wingate and Datil areas for the test.
There had been a dozen previous intercept test launches, the most recent in November 2004.
The test was done under the auspices of the Army Program Office for Missiles and Space in Huntsville, Ala.
